Formed in 1975 by Clara Overend, the Abbotsford Blades later changed our name to the Matsqui Blades. The Blades have a strong tradition of speed skating in the Fraser Valley. We are proud to call Olympic Team member Alanna Kraus and National team member Bryce Holbech past members.
Throughout the years many children and youth have been challenged to learn a new sport. We can proudly say that several of our own skaters have excelled and have competed against broader Canadian and International competition.
OUR SEASON
Our season runs from September to approximately March of the following year.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Mondays
4:30 – 6:45
Tuesdays
4:00 – 5:30
Ice times will depend on age and skill level.
COMPETITIONS AND RACES
During a ‘normal’ year there are opportunities for meets between the various Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley clubs. Participation in a meet is voluntary.
SKATES and EQUIPMENT
We have speed skates available for use with a returnable deposit. Helmets, neck guards, and shin pads are also mandatory during all ice times. (Please refer to the Equipment page for a full list of acceptable equipment)
VOLUNTEER BASED
The Matsqui Blades are a registered non-profit organization and is run entirely by volunteers.
If you are a parent of an interested skater, please consider lending a hand. An easy way to help is with the set up and take down of the mats before and after each practice.
